Aside from their interest in relation to the painting, the drawings are not particularly compelling, and in fact the painting is the overwhelming reason to see this show.Īs a show, it's more the sort of thing you drop in on when you're in Washington anyway than the sort of thing you go to Washington for. Just restored, it is the centerpiece of a modest-sized National Gallery show containing the recently rediscovered full-size preliminary painting "Spanish Dancer," a number of preparatory drawings, and several other Sargent works on Spanish subjects. He gave her "El Jaleo" on the spot, and there it has remained ever since. Gardner invited Coolidge to her idiosyncratic palace Fenway Court, where she showed him her - heh heh - Spanish Cloister, just constructed, containing Spanish architectural elements and wall space PTC enough for a nice big painting. Coolidge was going to leave the painting to his son, but the latter died in 1912. While it was on exhibit at the 1882 Salon in Paris, it was bought by American businessman Thomas Jefferson Coolidge, who was related to the American collector Isabella Stewart Gardner. It's now at the National Gallery in Washington, on its first trip from its home in Boston since it went there in 1914. It's not profound, but it's bold and thrilling and fun. ![]() Marked by dynamic brushwork and dramatic lighting, especially on the dancer's white skirt, it's a tour de force. ![]() John Singer Sargent's "El Jaleo" (1882), his first major success, a great big (8 feet by 11 feet) painting showing a Spanish flamenco dancer on a shallow stage with musicians behind her. The exhibit begins with an introductory text full of not very meaningful generalities such as, "In an ecological age when the meaning of landscape is largely effected by the culture that inhabits the camera's geological subject, photography is again employed in a serious attempt to realize a new aesthetic in nature." Beyond that, there is little to guide the visitor through this confusing succession of images. Second, the written material is extremely poor. Most if not all of these have to do with man's interaction with the land in one way or another, good and bad, but the way they're presented doesn't add up to anything.
